Show News

Cuveglio April 25 2004, CIAM National Specialty 2004

Grand spring meeting and new unforgettable success for Willow in Cuveglio (VA), where the famous judge, breeder and international expert and author Mrs. Barbara Brooks was invited to judge the Annual Club Meeting and National Specialty, and to held the traditional breed seminar the day before the show together with Ms. J. Mattot, of Sendaishi Kennel, and Dr. L. Salamon of Clone Italy.
The 80 dogs entered were coming from several european countries beside of course all Italy.
Our Willow beside gaining the congratulations of Ms. Brooks won the very crowded female open class, went Best of Winners and earned her fourth CAC (the second in a specialty) so finishing her is now little more than a formality.
Furthermore Willow won again the CIAM Championship (the Junior version of the CIAM Club Championship she had already won last year).
Willow was defeated only by the mature lady Stormy Monday's Master Blaster Jamming owned by dear friend Gabriella Lovati of Grand Jorasses Kennel. Jamie also went BOB and BISS. Congratulation to Lella and to Jamie that retires with this win that tops off a very succesful career
Del Biagio Kennels were present in force and well represented by no less than 15 malamutes in all classes. The best results were obtained in male open and male young class, as Ms. Brooks didn't appreciate the overweight of the dogs in champions class (read interview) won by Athabaska Johnny Walker for the second year in a row. Johnny also went BOS. This boy has some appeal on American judges...!
Also Paha Sapa Kennels were well represented by a great number of young and puppies beside the partecipants in the other classes, and it was this kennel and its Kotzebue stock that went on to win the Best Breeder's Group.
Unfortunately only a few handlers and breeders posed for podium pictures and for this reason we don't have a full photo report of all the dogs.
But we have managed to put together a fair number of pictures of winners and placers of most classes. 16 pictures of the event on our website.

May 1st 2004 - Terni National Show - BOB, BOG e 3rd BIS

While we were still recovering from the emotions of the previous weekend, we were thrilled by a new and unexpected result.
On Terni National Show of may 1st Willow not only defeated the rest of the malamutes going BOB but went on to defeat all the rest of the dogs entered that day (about 1.000) except two, winning the Group and placing 3rd in the Best In Show competition, under FCI Group 5 (nordic breeds) specialist Mr. Paul Stanton from Sweden.
This result was unexpected as very seldom happens that a bitch goes on to place in the BIS contest. We are very proud of this result as it was obtained with a bitch not yet a champion and because Willow was owner handled that Sunday, which adds even more shine to the result.
We want to thank Mr. Di Lorenzo (breed Judge) and Mr. Stanton (group and BIS Judge) who recognized Willow's virtues and we hope this will be the first of many group and BIS placements.

Exclusive - Interview to Ms. Barbara Brooks

We had the pleasure to interview Ms. Brooks and we are happy about what she told us because this is exactly the same feeling we have.
It's all about "Form & Function" and this is our breeding philosophy, so we like to think she recognized in our willow one of the few working show dogs that entered the ring that day.

Before we started this interview she said she's not popular in her country and was not going to be popular here either, but critics coming from a long time breeder and expert like her can only be welcome and have to be taken into consideration by even the most experienced breeders.
Some breeders were not satisfied about the results of theyr dogs especially..[continued]

Highlights

Breeding criteria, genetic diversity and common prejudices in the European scenario

There are sure very different ideas regarding breeding plans and methods, especially regarding tight breedings as opposed to plans based on low inbreeding coefficients.
In Europe (and especially in northern countries from what I know) the tendency is to breed with low COI's, the reason being the concern regarding health that is somehow supposed to be at risk with tighter breedings.
Breeders underestimate the amount of diversity that can be present in a breed, even one with a limited group of founders.

Tonka makes history

Snowlion Soldier of Fortune "Tonka" already know as the top winning red in malamute history and multiple group winner, makes history as the first red to ever win an AKC all breed BIS.
We briefly summarize Tonka's career in the words of owner Renee Remhart, as we take the chance to remember the most famous reds in history thanks to a little history lesson by Suz Richardson. [continued]
